Agree with you Bruce; I was reluctant to read this book because of the cover (in the US) and the fact that the translator acknowkledged that the stories had been adapted with the author for a foreign audience. But I have not been disappointed. There is always a risk with adapted interviews. The same goes for Liao Yiwu, Zhang Xinxin or Feng Jicai…Look at Xinran, « China Witness, voices from a silent generation » could have been a great book as some of her previous collections of interviews; but severe editing would have been needed and 80 pages deleted; a pity because some of the interviews are first class…

« La qualité littéraire est très variable. » Absolutely. Zhang « Half of Man is Woman, » Xianliang’s novel about the effects of being imprisoned in a camp, is a classic.

But I can’t help wondering about how good Yang Xianhui’s « Woman from Shanghai »might be. Haven’t read it, but I did read his new book of short stories about ethnic Tibetans in Gansu, « Chronicles of South Gansu » (Gānnán jìshì). It’s really pretty poor. Those stories seem like they are based on fact, but he doesn’t know quite how to « fictionalize » them. As a result, they don’t « ring true. »

This is an important challenge in China, where writing about labor camps or unflattering portraits of ethnic minorities must be done very carefully. Otherwise,they will be heavily censored or simply not published.

I enjoyed your review of Chi Li’s work.

Curious, I Googled the author of « Life Show » after I saw the movie.

Too bad Chi Li’s work hasn’t been translated into English.

I would like to read her work.
